The Long Wave behind the Keel

PLOT

based on the novel by Pavel Kohout

A cruise ship brings together two people that had belonged to opposing political camps during the Second World War and who had become mortal enemies: Professor Martin Burian, a former representative of the Czech government, and Margarete Kämmerer, one of countless Germans expelled from the Sudetenland.

Margarete remembers Burian as one of the Czechs who were bent on eradicating the entire German male population after the war ended – including her first husband, Sepp. However, Martin Burian is still painfully aware that Sepp Pichler was the ambitious Nazi responsible for his brother’s death.

On the ship they cannot avoid each other, nor is it a place where the past can easily be forgotten. Margarete is accompanied by her nephew Sigi, who is intent on ensuring that the ashes of his aunt, now close to death, will be scattered into the sea – in the long wave behind the keel. Martin is traveling with his daughter-in-law Sylva, who had been abandoned by her husband. Sylva also has the long wave in her sights; she is prepared to end her life. Confronted with their elders’ history and hoping for reconciliation, Sylva and Sigi become close. But then Margarete and Martin suddenly disappear from the ship without a trace…
