The Midwife

PLOT

The year 1799. A century of enlightenment has established science as the new faith and rationalism as the sacred principle of post-religious Europe.

Heeding her mother’s dying wish, 17–year–old Gesa moves to the city to learn midwifery at the local birthing house. To her horror, she discovers the physicians under the domineering Dr. Kilian treat needy mothers and their newborn infants as objects of study.

Gesa’s arrival is overshadowed by tragedy, as a wave of apparent suicides devastates the city. Near the bodies a masked man has been spotted. Driven by fear, Gesa trusts nobody but the head of the Anatomy Institute, Dr. Clemens Heuser. Not even universally respected midwife Elgin, who seems to act very cold toward Gesa. But why? After
all, Gesa’s mother was Elgin’s best friend!

Meanwhile, Gesa and Clemens become lovers, but high society is disdainful of their relationship – the young midwife is far from a good match for the well-respected doctor.

After the head midwife is murdered and remains of a mask are found, vagabond Konrad is condemned to death but vanishes just before his execution. The city is gripped by panic. Soon, the masked man returns, attempting to strangle Elgin. Gesa arrives in the nick of time and knocks him out with a powerful blow. Pulling the mask off the unconscious figure, she is horrified to discover a familiar face...
